Lip and Palate and Craniofacial Deformities are among the most common birth defects that could lead to many problems, and has many complications, which can effect on both the physical and mental health of the patients, parents and their families. It can also lead to economic loss of the country. The obvious physical deformities that we could see are facial deformation, slurred speech, otitis media complications, hearing problems and ear infections, swallowing problems, nasal speaking voice, dental and occlusal problems, and growth delays. According to previous studies, the incidence rate of Cleft Lip and Palate in the Northeastern region of Thailand was about 1.93 per 1000 newborns, which is the highest incidence rate in the world, and it could be estimated that there will be as high as 800 newborns with cleft lip and palate in the Northeast and 2000 cases all over the country per year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the past, treatments of Cleft Lip and Palate patients in Thailand were mostly done by a surgery, and\/or the patient received care by an independent team of medical personnel, meaning each department work individually and had lack of coordination in treatment planning and interdisciplinary team treatment making cleft lip and palate treatment in the past inefficient and left some of the problems untreated, this lead to treatment redundancy, sometimes this could even lead to patients having unnecessary complications and patient\u2019s growth delays and also substantial economic loss.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Treatment and rehabilitation of patients with Cleft Lip and Palate requires a continuous and long-term follow-up treatments until the patients are fully grown. This must be done by a multidisciplinary team. Specialized personnel in many fields would work together and have instruments to measure the holistic treatment outcomes from different periods of time until the end of the treatment. This will allow the patient to receive a correct and appropriate treatment to reduce the incidence of complications and allows the patient to be completely rehabilitated and able to live normally in the society.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Research Center of Cleft Lip-Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Deformities, Khon Kaen University in association with Tawanchai Project (Tawanchai Center) has been announced by Khon Kaen University to be a specialized research center in a fiscal year 2006 under the announcement of Khon Kaen University No. 85\/2550 titled \u201cTestimonial for Foundation of a Specialized Research Center, Khon Kaen University in year 2006\u201d Which announced on 19<sup>th<\/sup> January 2007. This is a which is a continuation of the \u201c Tawanchai Center for Patients with Cleft Lip Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Deformities Khon Kaen University\u201d before receiving the official foundation testimonial, Srinagarind Hospital under the Faculty of Medicine, Khon Kaen University which is the first University Hospital of the Northeast region. The hospital has been in operation since 1975, later on, there was an awareness of the importance of continuous care for cleft lip and palate patients. This lead to the creation of the multidisciplinary team specialized on treating patient with cleft lip and palate. The team consists of plastic surgeons from the Department of Surgery, pediatricians, neurosurgeons, otolaryngologists, nurses and dentists from the dental department of Srinagarind Hospital.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1990 a treatment and services for patients with cleft lip and palate was provided, in coordination with the Department of Orthodontics of the Faculty of Dentistry, Khon Kaen University, which has been sponsored by Professer Keith Godfrey, former Division of Orthodontics Head of The University of Sydney. The first Thai Cleft Meeting was held in 1992 and the second one in 1994 then there was a dental service for cleft lip and palate patients at the Faculty of Dentistry, shortly after that, a dental service for cleft lip and palate patients at the Faculty of Dentistry was created.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 1999, there was an attempt to develop a multidisciplinary management system to take care of patients with cleft lip palate and craniofacial deformities. Dr. Bawornsilp Chowchuen (position at that time) Head of Plastic Surgery Department, the Faculty of Medicine along with other founding members from other branches, such as Obstetricians, Pediatricians, Plastic surgeons, Neurosurgeons, Otolaryngologists, Orthodontist Dentists, Oral and Maxillofacial surgeons, Anesthetists, Psychiatrists, Speech Therapists, Nurses, Social workers and Biostatisticians, with Professor Keith Godfrey, who has experience managing the care system for patients with Cleft Lip and Palate from the Royal Alexandra Children\u2019s Hospital, Australia as a consultant. In the first phases, the Center received budget for carrying out activities from the Research Department of the Faculty of Medicine. Khon Kaen University. The group has conducted activities related to treatment of patients with Cleft Lip and Palate whether it was researches, patient services, and the group has continuously organized academic conferences. A special Clinic was arranged every 4<sup>th<\/sup> Friday of the month to give advices to patients with Cleft Lip and Palate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In 2000, a Center for Patients with Cleft Lip Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Deformities was created, with co-ordination and support from The Smile Train Charity Organization to help develop a system to take care of patients with Cleft Lip and Palate under the name \u201cThe Smile Train Cleft Care Project: Khon Kaen University Cleft Center\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Activities carried out by aforementioned multidisciplinary team are focused on developing the system to take care of patients with cleft lip and palate efficiently to improve the quality of living of the patients. The system has a strategy that focused on the involvement of patients, families, and staff. \u201cTawanchai Project\u201d is the improvement of the quality and efficiency of patient care processes in both treatment and prevention. This project is founded under the royal permission on the Occasion\u00a0of Her Royal Highness Princess Sirindhorn\u2019s 48<sup>th<\/sup> Birthday Anniversary. In the year 2004, the center receive an official endorsement from Princess Sirindhorn and to open up Tawanchai Center for Patients with Cleft Lip Cleft Palate and Craniofacial Deformities at Dental Clinic 1 Building at the Faculty of Dentistry, Khonkaen University on Monday 20<sup>th<\/sup> December 2004. The opening ceremony was attended by the Princess herself. The Center has determined that, from now on, every December 20<sup>th<\/sup> of each year is \u201cTawanchai Day (Day of the Sunshine\u201d to be a day for celebrating and reminding everyone about mutually beneficial activities between interdisciplinary team, patients, families, and related persons.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The purposes and outcomes of the Center\u2019s activities are centered on treatment and rehabilitation of patients and families, which, in addition to enhancing the rehabilitation processes for the patient, also sets a high standard for the health organization service system all over the country. The Center is also a learning hub, publishing researches and arranging study tour for outside personnel, and make them be able to apply the knowledge developed in the Center. The aim is to spread the use of knowledge received from Tawanchai Center to patients, families, and related person to strengthen the patient care systems from local organizations to national and international cooperative institutes. Patients\u2019 data is collected to aid research and develop a body of knowledge that is in line with Khonkaen University\u2019s strategic plan and the National Economic and Social Development Plan, Including the creation of a learning system for both personnel and related organizations to lead to the development of a good system to help care for patients with Cleft Lip, Cleft Palate and
